About the Cecchetti Method
Cecchetti is a classical ballet training method developed by the Italian ballet master Enrico Cecchetti, who lived from 1850 to 1928. He was one of the great virtuoso dancers of his era. He danced as Premier Danseur at Russia's Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, originated the role of the Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty in 1890, and later taught Anna Pavlova and worked with the Ballets Russes.
Rather than teaching that varied from one teacher to the next, Cecchetti built a systematic, progressive method. It is a set daily and weekly cycle of exercises so every step is trained in a specific order, with a full understanding of the theory and anatomy behind each movement, not just imitation.
The method was written down in 1922 in the Manual of the Theory and Practice of Classical Theatrical Dancing, co written with Cyril W. Beaumont, and the Cecchetti Society was founded that same year in London to preserve and teach it. It remains one of the most respected classical training systems in the world, still used today by major schools such as The Royal Ballet School.
- For our dancers, training grounded in this method means correct placement, strong classical lines, and musicality built in from the very first steps, taught by instructors who trained in the method themselves.
